In a steep and beautiful bush-covered valley up the coast from Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island are five small private coal mines. Their incline railways, flumes and 'bins' cling to the valley sides. The strongly independent men who built and work them do so with astonishing ingenuity, resourcefulness and engineering skill: qualities upon which they have staked their successful livelihoods and unique way of life.
