Full Description
New Zealand's geographic proximity to Antarctica has led to an active involvement in the scientific exploration of the Ice Continent since Scott Base was constructed near the Ross Ice Shelf :In the mid '50s. Each year many scientific projects or 'events' are undertaken in the New Zealand Dependency. By comparison with the larger nations the New Zealand effort in Antarctica is unique - over 100 scientists and general personnel are stationed at Scott Base during the summer months and per head of population results of their scientific exploration could be higher than any other country. Antarctica has seen two historical periods. Following the early Age of Exploration came the Age of Scientific Exploration. Now with world pressure on the greater extraction of natural resources the question is - will the next Age be that of Exploitation? If so what will be the result on a continent, hitherto untouched, which determines much of the Global Eco system? What will be the implications for Mankind?
